Critique

I was delighted to be asked to judge this show and looked forward to it in anticipation for a long time.  The event was even better than I expected as so many of the dogs exhibited on the day were pleasing in quality and to me, typical of the Dalmatian as I have envisaged it for many years. In short, there was in most classes both depth of quality and pleasing type, with not as much variation in styles as I have seen at many shows over the last decade or two: congratulations to the breeders and owners on presenting such a delightful entry.

Certainly the soundness of most exhibits has improved dramatically since I last judged in NSW (yes there were good ones then too- but this time there were fewer with major movement issues proportionately than the last few times I judged in the state).  Likewise the coats and decoration were on the whole good, the eye colour was definitely improved overall and the temperaments were pretty good.  As usual, most exhibitors handled well or better than well, which made it much easier for me to compare dogs and to see them at their best. Some classes had more good dogs than places available – always an envious, if difficult, position to be in. And there were a number of exhibits I would love to have in my yard!

My sincere thanks to all those who entered their dogs and exhibited- it was truly a pleasure to judge on the day, and great to later catch up with so many old friends.

Now- to some details on the placegetters:

Special Veteran (2/3)
1. Ch. Dumbledeer Magic Mandy - An 11year old black spotted bitch in great condition for her age: She has correct angulation, a lovely coat , head, neck and neck arch and set in, a strong level topline with a slight drop over croup, very sound out, back and around, balanced front to rear in stride and correct height to length. A worthy winner who showed very happily.

2. Bemara Ice on Fire - another  11 year old , this time a liver also in great condition.  A lovely head and topline, good angulation, excellent tailset, height to length and movement, spotting even but a bit heavier than 1st, again happy , a bit heavier in the neck although it had good length and arch and set well into the shoulders.  A close decision on quality.

Veteran (4/5)

1. Ch Emerlyn Tommy Hilfiger - a 7 year old black spotted dog, lovely head with good dark eye, nice neck and neck set, strong bone,  even decoration and pigment despite some age ticking; topline level though a slight drop over croup, would like a tiny bit more length to height, excellent forechest,  sound out and back, overreaches slightly on the side but good stride length, held topline on the move, strong thigh, would like just a shade more turn of stifle.

2. Ch Wanjdal Tuscan Sun - another 7 year old dog, liver with outstanding coat and markings and large liver spots, lovely head and eyes, slightly straighter in angulation than 1st and lighter in bone, very good neck and neckset,  good level topline, sound out and back, again slight overreach on side gait.

3. Ch Yarrowfell Fyrebird CD ET - an 8year old black bitch, very feminine, lighter framed,  longer cast, lovely head, neck and topline, correct angulation, spotting smaller in size and lighter but even and of good pigment, movement free with no overreach (due to her better length) but closer behind, a little wide in front movement  and did not hold topline as well on move

4. Ch Hillofsilver Lazer - an 8 year old black spotted dog of very pleasing shape on the stack, excellent coat, topline , eyes and eye colour, correct angulation front and rear: slightly cheeky in an otherwise nice head, thicker in the neck and wider in front,  sound sideways and  a bit close behind in movement, slight overreaching and did not hold his topline on the move.

Neuter Sweepstakes (3/4)
1. Gr Ch Paceaway Iced Koffee - a 9 year old liver bitch of super type, a smaller girl but lovely coat, decoration,  topline, neck and chest and correct angulation; she has  good head planes and a lighter eye (not headlights!), good decoration,  is free but a little close out and back.

2. Ch Dimadal Ella Enchanted ET - another super type of bitch, 5 years,  a bit chubby on the day, excellent coat, slightly heavier and uneven in markings, good pigment, dark eyes, good head, correct angulation, good forechest and bone, level topline with slight drop over croup, did not hold topline as well on move as 1st, lovely freedom,  good out and back, a bit weighty in front to rear but a close decision with 1st.

3. Ch Hillofsilver Kavalier - a 9 year old liver dog with super head and topline, neck and neckset, nice body would like a little more length for height, good hind angulation, slightly short in upper arm, sound in movement but with a shorter front stride.

Baby Dog (1/1)
1. Krysatway Minister of Magic - a 4.5 month black boy, a bit worried at first, lovely decoration, pigment, coat, head planes and head, topline, angulation and bone, slightly long in loin and shorter on foreleg at present, excellent tail set, very sound out and back and free.

Minor Puppy Dog (2/2)
1. Whytewood Jacks Choc Delight (AI)- a liver of excellent type, shown too fat (please take some weight off him! He won despite his weight, not because of it), excellent coat , large spots of excellent pigment, a bit too heavily but evenly marked, very balanced front to rear standing and moving  and correct in height to length, excellent topline and tail set, bone, chest, angulation , thickest second thigh (not common enough these days), balanced free and sound in movement,  slightly light in eyes otherwise nice head.

2. Starswept Galileo - a black boy , taller than the first, lighter framed and longer cast with an excellent topline, tailset and pigment, some ticking in coat and less even in markings; nice reach  and set of neck,  good head planes but with lighter eyes and muzzle is a little finer, good depth of chest and nice tuck up,  he has moderate angulation but  is a bit short in upper arm so his movement was not as balanced as the 1st, although sound.

Puppy Dog (2/2)
1. Dulalune Bonnie Prince Forever - a black boy, of good height to length, nice head, medium eye colour, bit thick in neck though a good length and set, excellent topline standing and moving, balanced gait front to rear, sound out and back,  good coat and pigment though a little uneven in markings, excellent hind quarter musculation. Not quite my type, but a good dog.

2. Jendally Front Page News - a black boy, more my type, a bit nervous on the day, taller and lighter framed than the 1st, excellent topline moving and standing, lighter in the head, nice planes, lovely reach and set of neck, good pigment, heavier marked but even, some shadowing at present, lovely short hock, a little straighter in front angulation, very free in movement but not as clear out and back as 1st.

Junior Dog (2/2)

Two fairly similar type black spotted dogs, both with glorious coats, pigment and markings.

1. Dallydom Digger - correct height to length proportions, slightly heavier in head, dark rounder  eye, excellent bone , reach and set of neck,  chest , topline moving and standing,  correct angulation,  sound and free out, back and around, a very promising young dog

2. Wanjdal Dare To Dream - not outgoing today; excellent head, neck reach and set, chest, topline standing, though tending to crouch and hunch a little on stack,  topline level on move but slight drop over croup, slightly shorter length to height proportions, very good freedom around ring, not quite as sound out and back as 1st.

Intermediate Dog (2/2)
1. Ch Krystaway Weekend Hustler - a very good type  liver of nice pigment and markings, though slightly smaller spot size,  with a super head, beautiful spotted ears (so hard to get with sufficient body markings)  and lovely  neck arch and set, nice reach,  good length to height proportions, good  bone for size,  excellent topline, tailset and chest , nice angulation front and rear, good side and rear  movement, a little wide in front movement.

2. Sprintaway Smooth Satin - another liver of very good type and decoration, with slightly larger spot size than winner, a little heavier in body and head than the 1st, good head, lovely neck set and arch, good reach of neck,  good level topline with slight drop over croup, lovely hindquarter,  very good freedom and sound away, but shallower in forechest and slightly elbowing today.

Aust Bred Dog (4/6)

When this class came into the ring, I knew the heat was on!

1. Ch Paceaway Kold Kash - a superbly decorated and pigmented black spotted dog of excellent type and proportions, perhaps slightly tall, but beautifully balanced. Masculine but not coarse, with a super head and eye, neck and neck set, topline (which was maintained on the move) and tailset. Good length, width and depth of chest without any barrelling, filled but not prominent forechest, correct angulation front and rear. Movement was free, balanced front to rear and sound back and front. Not exaggerated in any feature other than quality, I wish I had bred him!

2. Ch Jayboir Jesper - overall a very similar type of black dog, though a bit thicker in the neck, slightly leggier in body proportion, not quite a well decorated as he has larger densely black spots but also some secondaries, he had the best hindquarter second thigh in the class (and one of the best on the day). Very pleasing head and flow of topline from neck though to tailset, held topline on the move.  He is also free in movement, balanced and sound out and back.

3. Gr Ch Krystaway Dream Catcher - a third excellent dog in this class, also black with good decoration though some secondaries. Very similar type especially to the first, with a lovely head, neck and topline through to tailset, again held on the move. Lovely chest depth and follow through, correct angulation, very balanced and free in movement front and rear, but not as sound out and back on the day as the first two. The differences in these three dogs were minor in degree!

4. Ch Gentry Justa Rockstar - Another typey black boy with good even, densely pigmented decoration despite  some secondaries.  He has good front angulation, lovely head, slightly thicker neck, but a good neck and body topline and tailset, topline had very slight rise on the move. He has a little less hind angulation and freedom than those  in front of him, hence less balanced front to rear when moving but is sound out and back.

Open Dog (6/7)

A lovely class of quality dogs which were very hard to separate: there were some slight differences in type, and I went for those with the least exaggeration in combination with the quality: apart from decoration and freedom, our breed standard calls for moderation in many aspects and in this class that became a deciding point in separating placed and unplaced dogs. Not a bad dog in this class, although one did not show to his best advantage

1. Visualimpact Saffron Rice - a larger black dog with superb pigment, slightly heavier in markings but even,  excellent coat, excellent type and proportions, super head and eye, neck and neck set, topline and tail set, topline steady on the move, totally correct in angulation, has the best depth and length of chest (almost old fashioned in style) and fill of forechest without excessive width or prosternum, very good mover , balanced front to rear, free and sound out and back; at times stood with his head too high and back too far as baited too close, making his neck and shoulders look upright and overfronted, but when the handler let him take a more natural stance,  he was correct in all these aspects.  Slightly bigger than I like, but balanced and not coarse.

2. Ch Dumbledeer U Dared Me CCD - Another typey dog of lovely proportions, nice size, even decoration of lovely spots, though not quite as white in base coat; masculine, not coarse, very unexaggerated. Correct angulation, superb second thigh (best in this class), lovely head and neck and neck arch and set, topline and tail carriage, tiny drop over croup at set on only noticeable on the move;  he is beautifully balanced on the stand and moving, with freedom and soundness out and back.

3. Gr Ch Sprintaway Chief Cheroke - probably the best decorated dog in the class, black spotted, slightly longer in body proportion to height (but only marginal), super  head, neck, topline and tailset, lovely angulation, free, balanced  and sound in movement, a little more forechest and prosternum than those in front and not quite as good in bone for size.

Dog Challenge

The lineup was very pleasing: full of type. I went for the dog who exemplified type and balance with the best movement overall and the best topline, coupled with lovely decoration and showing his head off on the day. Challenge went to Ch Paceaway Kold Kash, Reserve to Visualimpact Saffron Rice.

Baby Bitch (1/1)
1. Krystaway Without Makeup - a 4.5month oldlightly marked  liver with lovely outline although slightly long in proportion at present, beautiful head shape, would like darker eyes, excellent reach of neck and arch, good neck set,  topline and tailset, held on the move – and what super movement for a baby; correct angulation, nice bone and feet and good even spotting  and pigment, smaller spot size with a few ticks. Would like to own her as she is promising.

Minor Puppy Bitch (1/1)
1. Dimadal Kenya Live The Dream - a smaller but typey black spotted girl with a lovely head and round eye, good neck and topline, held on the move, good angulation, good bone and feet, sound out and back and free in movement, unfortunately a bit nervous on the day so did not show her best, although friendly to me.

Puppy Bitch (4/4)
1. Telde Mischievous Kiss - a black spotted girl who was unfortunately quite chubby and not handling particularly well (a bit naughty at times), but the best balanced in body and movement in the class. Best bone and feet in the class.  She has a lovely head, neck and angulation, good topline held on the move and her movement is both very balanced fore and aft, free and sound. Her markings are good, though not the best in the class, and her spotting pigment is good but the base white is not as spectacular as several of the others in the class. PLEASE take some weight off her before she gets into the older classes!

2. Dumbledeer Aesturias - another very balanced black marked girl, agin  with lovely head and neck,  topline, body and angulation, though a little lighter framed than first andnot quite as good in hindquarters as first. A  slight drop over croup to tailset; very nice balanced sound movement.

3. Paceaway Gosh Im Flash - a lighter framed  girl with a gorgeous neck and head shape, lightish eyes, front is not her fortune. She has good free movement and sound away but her front is not as firm, nonetheless typey.

Junior Bitch (5/6)
1. Ch Sprintaway Shakiera - a very typey liver girl of excellent proportions length to height; lovely head, neck and neckset, topline  and tailset, held on the move, good bone for size, excellent angulation and an excellent sound, free mover. Very even markings and excellent pigment though smaller spot size.

2. Telde The Blair Witch- a typey lighter marked black a bit heavier in body with lovely chest, would perhaps like a tad more foreleg, but that is picky. Good head, good topline, quite good angulation, good bone,  very balanced on the move and standing, markings a little scattered but good pigment, a few smaller spots in with the larger. Stood beautifully without help.

3. Krystaway Twilight Eclipse - a typey lighter framed liver with a pretty head shape (lack of markings on head a minor distraction), lovely neck, neckset and topline, though not held as well on the move. Sound in front, but not as free as those in front and not as clear going away. Good pigment and nice even  decoration on a lovely coat.

Intermediate Bitch (4/5)
1. Visualimpact Divine Chocolat - a lovely type liver with beautiful  decoration of moderate sized spots and beautiful proportions of length to height.  Excellent head, neck, topline and tailset, bone, angulation, chest and a free balanced  and sound mover. A tough act to follow in the class, and one of the bitches I would like to own or have bred!

2. Coastdal Princess Lilly Rose - a lightly but evenly marked liver of nice type, liver pigment a bit too dark, taller than the first place, head nice planes but a little cheeky, good neck and topline, good bone, not quite as well angulated as first, but balanced front and rear, not as free as first in movement, fairly sound.

3. Ch Texico Miss Izzy B (AI) - A rangier and slightly larger liver bitch with smaller spot size, evenly marked, nice pigment. Lovely head, neck and topline, good depth and width of chest though cuts up a bit quickly, free in movement though less angulation than first and not as sound. Did not show well on the day.

Aust Bred Bitch (6/7)

A very good and even class, although two of the girls had underline issues (false pregnancies) which can be expected in more mature bitches but spoils the outline a little in the final lineup, especially in the challenge lineup. I assess all dogs on their qualities, and will always choose one with permanent good features and temporary problems over the reverse, but it is a show ring and still comes into consideration. Again, the depth of quality right through the class was an unexpected and pleasing surprise

1. Blairwick Dare To Be Foxy - A moderate sized black bitch of lovely type and proportions. She was the best mover in the class, free, sound and balanced, and had the best overall head and topline, neckset and chest shape, spoilt by her underline on the day. Nice bone for size, excellent pigment and good decoration, would like a slightly longer neck and darker eye. Correct angulation front and rear, good forechest, solid hindquarter.

2. Ch Visualimpact Star Attraction - a bigger black girl, of nice proportions,  excellent decoration and pigment, super head, topline, and tailset,  good neck arch and length though not quite as nice a neckset as first (tended to hold neck too vertically), good chest and correct angulation, balanced front to rear, very good sound and fairly free movement. A close decision.

3. Hillofsilver Prisaya - Va liver with beautiful  decoration and type, good body proportions, nice bone and chest, correct angulation,  head a bit smaller for size, neck and forechest  a bit weaker than first two, good neck and topline, slight drop over croup visible on move,  movement sound and reasonably free though flagged at end,  but the decision between the first three places was tight.

4. Sprintaway Arabella - another typey girl, black spotted, not quite as well marked as the ones in front, with some tickspots,  excellent neck, neckset and topline, though tailset not as good as those in front, nice head shape but lighter in eye, lighter framed and boned, good angulation, would like a little more depth of chest, bone not quite as good for size as some in front, underline spoilt outline on day. Excellent freedom but not quite as sound  out and back.

Open Bitch (6/7)

What a class: this class had some super quality bitches in it, with the first two placed like peas in a pod in both type and movement, and very, very hard to separate: I wish I owned or bred both of them!! The rest of the class was again of good quality and very pleasing, but the two top girls are something special.

1. Gr Ch Hillsofsilver Paparazzi- a gorgeous type black bitch , smaller size, beautiful length to height, excellent musculation, excellent decoration and pigment on a lovely coat, excellent angulation, lovely head with dark eyes despite small pigment fault, excellent neck, arch and neck set into lovely topline (except when overstretched at times on the stack) and tailset, held on the move,  good depth and length of chest with good forechest, nice tuck up, good bone and feet , balanced and free in movement, sound out and back, preferred it when handler went a little slower so she was not forced to over reach when stretched to her speed limit. Overall: WOW.

2. Ch Hillofsilver Lillibet - a very similar liver girl, slightly taller and in outstanding condition for her age (8 years).  Again, beautiful length to height, musculation marginally less but great for age, excellent decoration and pigment on a lovely coat, excellent angulation, lovely head with dark eyes, excellent neck, arch and neck set into lovely topline and tailset, held on the move,  good depth and length of chest with good forechest, nice tuck up, good bone and feet , balanced and free in movement, sound in front but a tad closer behind on the day – probably due to her age, as she was still basically sound. Flagged a tiny bit near the end- again, no doubt age and a very long class runoff due to the difficulty in separating these two. Again, WOW: at the end of the class I realised who she was and that I have loved her since she was a pup: that has not changed.

3. Ch Lukius Solar Flare ET - a nicely pigmented liver with a mix of bigger and smaller spot size and some flecks, less pleasing to the eye, nice proportions, good type, excellent head, neck, body and topline, good hindquarter with lovely low hock,  a little short in upper arm length, hence movement not quite as free in front and sound as first two.

4. Ch Jayboir Jade - A bigger black with lovely balance and proportions, markings not as good as first two, but good size and pigment mixed with some ticks, head planes not parallel, and eyes not as dark as I would like,  good neck length but a little thick, good topline though tending to lean back on handler at stack. Excellent depth and follow through in chest, very good angulation, with low hock and nice bone, movement good and sound but not quite as free.

Bitch Challenge

I was thrilled with the bitches in my lineup: most of them were of a similar type, and the Intermediate in particular, as well as the Junior, pushed very hard for the Challenge against the eventual winner and reserve, the two opens. Show condition told against the Australian bred, despite similar type and movement quality to the others.

Challenge went to Gr Ch Hillofsilver Paparazzi, Reserve Challenge to Ch Hillofsilver Lillibet: the breeder of these two girls should be very proud-it is not easy to breed one so good, let alone two from different litters, and to have such similar type.

Best of breed runoff

I was excited to see, when the dog and bitch entered the ring, that the competition would be no walk over, despite my tendre for the two bitches: the dog is of similar type as well, and also of excellent decoration and movement, so again a very tight decision. I had no prior idea of the breeding  or dogs (except for the reserve bitch) and was pleased to come up with 3 Dalmatians in the top spots who are the type I like and full of quality. Congratulations to the winners, but also to the other exhibitors, who showed excellent sportsmanship and who on the whole gave me a quality entry
