Critique

First I must Thank the Committee of the DCNSW for inviting me to judge your October Championship show. I had a most enjoyable day and congratulate all exhibitors for the sporting way they accepted my decisions. The atmosphere at the show was wonderful. I must give a special Thank You to my steward and long time friend, Ian Miller. He went about his job quietly, efficiently and in a friendly manner.

Before I give my critique I must apologize. I have had to rely on my memory because my tape recorder played up.

VETERAN DOG.
1ST: CH. YARROWFELL ULTRA DOG CD ET.
A lovely dog in good condition, spotting nicely distributed and of good size, coat nice and white. Good head and ears but expression a little sad. Body of good length with a nice sloping wither giving a nice clean curve from the neck to a good level back and tail set. Chest ribbed well back with good angulation front and rear. Dog moved freely around the ring holding top line, good tail carriage. OPPOSITE SEX VETERAN IN SHOW.

VETERAN BITCH
1ST: CH GENTRY JEWEL OF THE NILE ET.
Lovely feminine bitch, correct head with nice eyes and ears correctly set. Dense black spotting on a lovely white coat with a good wither. Top line beginning to go a little. Nice chest, ribs well sprung, good angulation front and rear, moved well around the ring with a good extension. Close decision for Best Veteran. BEST VETERAN IN SHOW.
2ND CH GENTRY QUESTIONABLE LADY ET.
Very similar to the first bitch, not quite as good in the head and eye colour, but has nice feminine expression. Dense black spotting and a good top line. Good spring of rib, and ribbed well back. Free movement, top line firm and tail carriage good.
3RD: CH. RUNDOT LUSITE CHARM CD ET
This bitch is a bit square for me, and rather soft in top line. Chest of good depth, angulation quite good. Coat showing her age with some ticking, feet soft, not the quality of the first two placing's but she is almost 10 years old.

BABY PUPPY DOG.
1ST: GEMCOURT IFLOOKZOODKYLL.
What a beautiful puppy! Good doggy head and strong muzzle, eyes dark and nice ear set. Body nicely proportioned, well ribbed up and depth to elbow. Well angulated, front and rear, good croup and tail set. Lovely white coat with dense black spotting. Even at his tender age, this puppy promises a great future. BEST BABY IN SHOW.
2ND: PACEWAY POIROT
Promising baby outclassed by the winner, but still a nice baby. Top line okay, nicely boned, angulation fine. Eyes a little light in colour, yet to come up on feet.
3RD: KIRINDAL MY APOLLO
Not up to the standard of the first two puppies. Head okay, ears dark in colour. Body okay but quite heavily spotted.

MINOR PUPPY DOG
1ST: DALLYDOM CENTAURI
Nice head and ear set, (just a little down faced) and good eye colour. Quite a good wither and top line. Chest fine with ribs well sprung and ribbed well back. Angulation adequate, spotting good, a little loose in movement. BEST MINOR PUPPY

PUPPY DOG
1ST: YARROWFELL FYREBRAND
Nice young dog of good proportions, good head and strong muzzle with nicely set ears. Nice sloping wither into level back with good tail set. Chest deep and well ribbed, nice angulation fore & aft. Spotting small but nicely distributed. Moved well with a firm top line and good carriage of tail. OPPOSITE BEST PUPPY IN SHOW
2ND: STARSWEPT TALLYHO SIRIUS
Good head, nice eye colour, well set ears. Level back, tail set a little high. Lovely coat and spotting, good chest, well ribbed back. Smart dog on the move, firm top line
3RD: DALLYDOM COMET
Not the quality of the first two dogs. Not fond of head, plain. Ear set okay, wither and top line okay. Adequate angulation. Tail set a little too high. Moved okay.

JUNIOR DOG
1ST DUMBLEDEER SUN DANCER
Dog of nice proportions, nice head with good eye colour. Good slope to wither and nice arch to neck. Nice top line, gently arched loin, good tail set. Nice black spots of good size. Moves well, with good extension front and rear. Top line firm, would like to see a little more turn to stifle. BEST JUNIOR IN SHOW
2ND: GENTRY ZANZIBAR MOON
Lovely dog, immature but showing a lot of promise, nice head, ears well set, good chest and well ribbed up. Good top line and tail set, with good angulation. Moved well holding top line
3RD: BLAIRWICK RED DRAGON
Head quite nice with good eye colour, needs to build up body. Tail set could be better, movement okay from the side but too wide in hindquarters when going away, giving a somewhat stiff action from side to side.

INTERMEDIATE DOG
1ST: CH. VICKMA CLANCY
Lovely proportioned dog with good angulation and slope of croup with excellent tail carriage. Good head and ear set with dark eye. Lovely top line, very sound movement with good extension front and rear, with firm top line. Needs a handler able to get the best movement out of him on the move. This dog has a lovely distribution of good size spots which need to clear up a little. Very promising young dog who with a little more maturity will go far. BEST OPPOSITE SEX INTERMEDIATE IN SHOW & RESERVE CHALLENGE DOG
2ND: YARROWFELL DÉJÀ VU
Good sound young dog, with good bone and angulation. Nice top line and tail set, head a little strong but good dark eye, and ear set. Lovely white coat with dense black spots of good size. A very happy dog moving with plenty of vigor, top line firm and tail carriage good.
3RD: PACEWAY ICED T
Not the quality of the first two dogs, proportions good, bit light in rib cage and wide stance, would like a bit more stifle. Nice coat and spotting well distributed. Good eye colour, nice head and ears.

AUSTRALIAN BRED DOG
1ST: GR. CH. STARSWEPT MOCHA MOTION
Nice liver dog, very masculine, strong head with nice ear set, clean neck and good slope of wither, into nice level back and good loin. Fore chest good with well sprung ribs of good depth and well ribbed back. Nice boned legs with good feet. Nice lay of shoulder and upper arm and nice turn of stifle. Clean coat and well spotted all over. Moved freely with a nice even gait and firm top line. CHALLENGE DOG, BEST OPP. SEX IN SHOW, OPP. AUST. BRED IN SHOW.
2ND: SPOTTOSPOT GAMESETNMATCH
Nice looking dog, good head and ear set, eyes need to be a little darker. Good coat and spotting. Good angulation and sound movement with a firm top line, tail set a little high.

OPEN DOG.
CH. STARSWEPT CANADA HOLIDAY
Lovely dog with a striking white coat, and clear dense black spotting. Lovely head and ear set. A lot to like about this dog but a little square for me. Deep rib cage, well sprung, lovely turn of stifle and short hocks. Moved smartly with firm back. OPPOSITE SEX OPEN IN SHOW.
2ND YARROWFELL ABCUS E.T
Another lovely dog, well balanced with good angulation and tail set. Nice head and ears and good even spotting. Good chest and top line. A happy dog, moving correctly with a firm top line and good extension front and rear. Good carriage of tail.
3RD BLAIRWICK ETERNAL WISDOM
Nice type of dog with sound proportions. Would like a little more turn of stifle. Nice head with a good eye colour and ear set. Movement okay.

OPEN NEUTER DOG
1ST CH. DALMEADOW MACDONNEL
Very happy dog, well fed. Strong doggy head with a good muzzle and ear set. Good high wither, back and tail set (neck a little thick). Good fore-chest, deep, well sprung ribs and well ribbed up. Angulation good, front and rear, with good width of upper thigh. Clear white coat with dense black spotting of good size. Sound mover. OPPOSITE SEX NEUTER IN SHOW.
2ND DALLYDOM ASHTON
Small, lightly framed dog. Front feet a little east west. Could have thicker pads. Would like a better top line, lightly spotted and not the best of movers, but a very happy dog.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH
1ST DALLYDOM CASSIOPEIA
Pleasing head and ear set, good sloping wither. Disappointing top line and tail set. Good chest, well ribbed back. Nice lay of shoulder, lacking in hind angulation. OPPOSITE SEX MINOR PUPPY IN SHOW

PUPPY BITCH
1ST YARROWFELL FYREBIRD
Lovely young bitch of nice proportions, feminine head and expression. Nice slope to wither, good top line and tail set. Good depth of chest, nice angulation with good length of 2nd thigh. Spotting good. Moved well. PUPPY IN SHOW
2ND HILLOFSILVER LILLIBET
Another nice puppy with good angulation, nicely balanced, with good top line and tail set. Good coat and spotting. Looked good on the move, with firm top line.
3RD CAYUSE JUST BETWEEN FRIENDS
Nice young bitch with good coat and spotting. Head and ears fine. Angulation good but falls away a little too much in croup, with tail set low. Moved soundly.

JUNIOR BITCH
1ST GEMCOURT ANADOT REGAL
Well balanced bitch with good angulation, lovely head and ear set and nicely arched neck, level back, nice slope to croup and good tail set. Well sprung rib cage to elbow, well ribbed back. Good feet. Moved well. OPPOSITE SEX JUNIOR IN SHOW
2ND BLAIRWICK SILVER FERN
Another nice bitch, lovely head and ear set. Would like eyes a bit darker. Lovely expression. Good in body and top line. Well sprung ribs and well ribbed up. Lovely angulation behind. Nice coat with lovely distribution of spots. Moved well.
3RD HILLOFSILVER LEILA
Looked good standing, could be ribbed up a bit more. Nice head and ear set with reasonably dark eyes. Moved well with firm top line.

INTERMEDIATE BITCH
1ST CH. PACEWAY ICED COFFEE
Beautifully balanced bitch with lovely head and ear set. Nice arch to neck and high sloping wither, blending smoothly into level back and nicely arch loin. Well sprung ribs, well ribbed back. Good lay of shoulders, elbows tight with good rear angulation. Good coat, beautifully spotted. Tight feet. Good mover. INTERMEDIATE IN SHOW
2ND GENTRY YUKON ROSE
Lovely bitch, nice head with feminine expression. Good top line and tail set. Good coat with dark black spotting. Smart mover.
3RD EXCHECKA MERRI MAY
Not the quality of those in front. Adequate angulation, spotting could be better. Moved okay.

AUSTRALIAN BRED BITCH
1ST CH. BLAIRWICK FOXY LADY E.T
What a beauty! Hard to take ones eyes off her. Such a lovely shape and balance, together with her lovely white coat and dense black spotting, lovely feminine head and ear set and the darkest of eyes I have seen in years (a rarity these days). Lovely neck and wither blending to a level back and loin, with beautiful tail set. Proportion of length to height spot on. Correct fore chest, nicely sprung ribs, lovely angulation front and rear with lovely width of upper thigh. Moved like a dream. Nice easy far reaching gait, top line and carriage of tail perfect. Just had to take first place. AUSTRALIAN BRED IN SHOW. RUNNER UP BEST IN SHOW. RESERVE BITCH CHALLENGE.
2ND. CH. DUMBLEDER GYPSY ROAMER C.D
Another quality bitch of good size and shape. Good head and ears. Lovely top line and croup with correct tail set. Spotting nicely distributed, good chest and ribbing with good angulation throughout. Very good on move. Very sound bitch.
3RD CH YARROWFELL ALLS FORGIVEN E.T
What can I say, 3rd lovely bitch very sound, of lovely shape. Nice head with feminine expression, soundly built with good angulation, nice croup, good tail set, nice legs and feet. Movement sound with good tail carriage.

OPEN BITCH
1ST GR. CH. GEMCOURT LIBERTY BELLE
Beautiful quality liver bitch of good size and shape. Perfectly proportioned, correct angulation throughout, with strong loin, good slope to croup and tail set correct. Nice lay of shoulder with good length of upper arm. Lovely stifle, hocks well let down with good tight feet. Right amount of fore-chest, well sprung ribs, well ribbed back (no chance of diaphragm problems with this dog - should run forever). Movement to die for, effortless, with good extension front and rear, back firm and tail carriage spot on. Should also mention that this lady has nice head expression with good dark eye. Handler sometimes spreads her too far when stacked spoiling top line. BEST IN SHOW, BEST OPEN IN SHOW, CHALLENGE BITCH
2ND CH. STARSWEPT BALENCIAGA
Another lovely bitch of nice proportions, good angulation, coat and spotting. Nice head with feminine expression, eye colour and ear set. Nice wither and top line, with good tail set. Good sound movement.
3RD CH. GENTRY STAR OF THE SOUTH
Good bitch with lovely black spotting, lovely head and expression, nice eye and good ear set. Top line good, tail well set, good angulation, sound movement.

OPEN NEUTER BITCH
1ST HILLOFSILVER HARLOW
Good liver bitch, nice head, ears could be better set. Clean neck blending into good high wither. Back firm with strong loin and nicely sloped croup with good tail set. Fore-chest good, well sprung ribs and ribbed well back. Well laid shoulder and upper arm. Good turn to stifle, feet tight. Well covered with good liver spots. Movement good. Nice bitch but too square for me. BEST NEUTER IN SHOW
2ND HILLOFSILVER KRYSTAL
Another lovely liver bitch, not as mature as first place, and obviously not used to being handled in the ring, but a very happy girl who moved nicely. Similar in type to winner and well spotted.
3RD CH. YARROWFELL SUPERMODEL E.T
10 year old of good type, proportions good and tail set fine. A little over weight. Coat and spotting showing her age, but enjoying her day out.

JUST A FEW GENERAL COMMENTS
It is obvious from the results that generally I liked the bitches more than the dogs. The decision for Best in Show was a hard one to make, both bitches were of such high quality and moved in exactly the same manner. I had to make my final decision on size. I was concerned generally about tail carriage in many exhibits. Remember the Dalmatian should have a saber tail: IE it should leave the croup level, or slightly below the horizontal, then curve gently upwards. A happy, excited dog may carry their tail high but one should look to see if the tail in inserted properly. Too many handlers spoil the look of a good specimen by holding the tail up American style.
