Critique

It was indeed a great honor to be invited to Judge the Specialty Championship Show in Sydney , Australia . Firstly I would like to thank the President, Derek Johnson and all his hard working committee for putting on a very well run professional show. Secondly I would like to thank the exhibitors and their Dalmatians for giving me such a good entry and also for being so sporting in accepting my placements on the day. Thirdly my hosts, Secretary, Marilyn Miller and Show Manager, Ian Miller, who so kindly took me under their wing; they chauffeured, wined and dined me and also did the “Tourist Sights “ which made my trip such a memorable one indeed. I really do thank you all Australia .

I left Spain for London with a connecting flight to Sydney via Singapore , arrived feeling, to say the very least, somewhat tired. It took me about 30 hours in total, so I left plenty of time before the show to try and get over the jet-lag.

The morning of the show I was very excited and when I arrived at the showground it was super to see all the exhibitors with their dogs outside around the show rings, which I did notice, you don't have benching. To me, this made it, more of a family like atmosphere and most enjoyable to see.

Judging commenced on time thanks to an excellent Show Secretary, Trish Dyer and my very well schooled Steward. Everyone gathered excitedly around the ring to see what the Judge was going to ask of them and then we were off into the first class of the day.

Generally on the whole I preferred the dogs. I noticed that there were a few light eyes creeping in and a few short muzzles. Also there was a few tails being carried high around the ring, also I did notice badly groomed nails. On a more positive note however, the movement was generally very good and most handling was super. I was more than pleased with my Blue Ribbon placements and a few of the Red's would exchange places on other occasions.

As to my BIS and RBIS, I was knocked over with such quality and so type like and to be told after that they were father and son, it really made my day. Also I did notice from this kennel came my BVIS. Best Opposite Sex was a delightful feminine bitch and challenged very hard indeed for top honors. The BPIS I noticed was imported from the UK . A new class to me was my Best Baby Puppy In Show and only 4 months old at that. I never thought I would say it, but there it was, the one the Judge wanted to take home. It was the first time out for both exhibitor and baby puppy. The dog has such outstanding qualities already there. The breeder should be very proud and also encourage, help and guide these new exhibitors. I shall watch and read his progress and hopefully one day he will make an Australian champion, if so I will be so proud of him indeed.

Thanks once again for making me feel so welcome and part of your family showing circuit in Australia .

Best Wishes and regards to you all,

Johnathan

VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES

DOGS

1st….Davies & Wrights GR CH STARSWEPT MOCHA MOTION *

Quality liver dog. Correct eye color, moved with drive, well schooled, good tail set and well sprung ribs. Worthy veteran GR CH

2nd… Lucas GR CH RAVENWYNTER RIVER RED

Another good quality liver, great freedom of movement, good level top line, shoulders clean and muscular and well defined withers.

3 rd … McConachy CH STARSWEPT CHIMNEYSWEEP ET

Well schooled, moved with drive and at ease with ones handler.

BITCHES

1st… Helland CH GENTRY QUSTIONABLE LADY ET

Black, feminine bitch, lots to like about her. Long reach of neck, nicely arched, free from throatiness. Loin strong, clean and muscular.

2nd… Helland CH GENTRY STAR OF THE SOUTH

Quality bitch challenged hard for blue ribbon. Bold spotting, good eye color, correct tail set and good mover. Just lost out today, will exchange, I am sure, on other occasions.

3 rd … Young CH DUMBLEDEER GYPSY ROAMER

Beautiful kind expression, elegant and fairly long neck, nicely arched. Good top line and tail set, length reaching approximately to hock. Today had to place third due to being a little lame which spoilt the overall movement, shame…

BABY PUPPY DOG

1st…Landon WHYTEWOOD DANGEROUS DAN *

Beautiful classy baby puppy, first time out. Good bone, super black spotted dog on a pure white coat. Good hind quarters and second thigh. Well shaped head with kind expression and darkest of eyes. Very happy baby and just sparkled, he just caught my eye upon entering the show ring. Should have a good future . A wonderful pleasure to award him Best Baby Puppy In Show.

2nd…Cooper CHOCOSPOT SHOW STEALER

Nice Baby, good black. Moved well for one so young, he enjoyed his day out.

3 rd …Dyer PACEAWAY TUFF JUSTICE

Needs time to settle but only a baby. Kind expression.

PUPPY DOG

1st…Francis PHIDGITY POLTERGEIST ( imp UK ) *

Good spotting, strong bone. Well shaped head with kind expression and darkest of eyes. Excellent shoulders with good level top line. Cat like feet and well groomed nails. Moved with drive and handled well. A pleasure to award Best Puppy In Show.

2nd…. Orr JAYBIOR JESTER

Very similar to above, however longer in body. Again good mover with ones handler and will swap places with first on another day.

3 rd …. Young DUMBLEDEER VIVA VICTORY

Beautiful bold black spotting on a pure white coat, dark eyes. Did not move as well as the above and just a little bit big for me.

JUNIOR DOG

1 st …Davis & Wright STARSWEPT JUST A GIGOLO *

Upstanding dog just had so much quality he demanded my attention upon entering the show ring. Shown in immaculate condition and so well handled. Excellent in spotting with beautiful head and darkest of eyes. Well sprung ribs, shoulders clean and muscular, hindquarters rounded and well developed second thighs. Also well arched toes and cat like feet and nails well trimmed. This dog challenged very hard indeed for top honors I seriously considered him for BIS but he just lost out in maturity and being beaten by his father today from the open class. I shall watch his progress in the near future and I am sure he will be an Australian Champion. A great pleasure to award him my RUBIS. ResChD.

2 nd … Young DUMBLEDEER U DARE ME

Another good dog from this well known kennel. Black bold spotting on the purist of white coats. Moved with drive and well schooled. Good tail set and standing four square. Well balanced and good angulations in the hind quarters. Has a good masculine head of correct size, a good reach of neck and well sprung rib cage.

3 rd … Donald SPRINTAWAY STAR GAZER

Liver dog, needs more time to relax. Would like a few more spots and also darker eye needed for the correct liver type, however a good mover with its handler.

INTERMEDIATE DOG

1 st … Donald CH KRYSTAWAY DREAM CATCHER

Much better quality than the Junior this owner has. Moved with drive and very sound. Good make and shape and a super level top line. Correct shaped head and a charming expression. Good shoulders, nice spring of rib leading to a good tuck up and a very well balanced dog. He deserved to win this class today.

2 nd … Beves & Estatheo CH BLAIRWICK SOUTHERN CROSS

Good make and shape, strong black pigmentation, nice eye color. Stood well. Was let down with close behind movement today, shame.

3 rd … Johnson OTTATELLA CARDINAL

Liver dog, very sound and good movement today, however just a touch big for my liking.

AUSTRALIAN BRED DOG

1 st … Young DUMBLEDEER SUNSPARK

Liked this one, good class to win. Good black spotted with deep pigmentation, correct eye color. Great freedom of movement, smooth powerful action with long stride. Good cat like feet . Excellent reach of neck flowing down to a good top line and tail set. Once again well schooled and stood all four square, perfect picture.

2 nd … Davis & Wright GR CH STARSWEPT MOCHA MOTION

Lost out in this class to a much younger dog, however he held is own and deserved the red ribbon today, well done.

3 rd … Harbin GR CH KRYSTAWAY DOT COM

Excellent handler moved the dog with good drive around the ring. Nice reach of neck and a good level top line. Just a bit thin for my liking. Would like a little more body or perhaps stacking and over stretched, spoilt the total picture.

OPEN DOG

1 st … Davis & Wright GR CH STARSWEPT CANADA HOLIDAY (AI) *

Stunning dog of correct breed type. Upon entering the ring this dog just oozed quality and demanded my attention. Excellent spotting on a pure white tight based coat and presented in immaculate condition. Schooled and handled to perfection, I could ask no more. Beautiful head, stunning expression, good reach of neck, sound top line and tail set. Well laid back shoulders and correct front. Sound fore chest and good angulated hindquarters, hence the hard drive from behind. It was indeed my greatest pleasure to award the blue ribbon today but also he had to challenge his son from Junior to be able to represent my Best In Show. A very worth Australian Champion indeed, well done. BIS, ChD.

2 nd … Young DUMBLEDEER SUN DANCER

Yet again another winner from these kennels, they breed so true to type which is wonderful to see. Shame this dog was up against my top winner today. It challenged hard for top honors but did not have the movement today. I am sure it won't be long before this dog gains his Australian title.

3 rd … Cooper CHOCOSPOT APACHE BRAVE

Not this dog's day and the spotting is far too heavily marked for me.

OPEN NEUTER DOG

1 st … Collins HARMONYHILL CASPER ET *

New class for a UK Judge to judge Bold upstanding dog, moved with drive around the show ring. He won Best Neuter on movement today.

BABY PUPPY BITCH

1 st …Donald PACEWAY TRUE JEWEL

Delightful showgirl, moved with drive, nice kind expression, sound condition and good top line with correct tail set. Nice Baby.

2 nd …Dr Van De Weg RETMA KOH IN NOR

Another good mover and well schooled already for such a baby. Good make and shape, will exchange places with winner on another day.

3 rd …Cooper CHOCCASPOT SHOW STOPPER

Liked this baby and wanted to do more for her. However she needs to be socialised more because if she keeps backing off the judge her show career will not be so good. Fingers crossed she will come out on top.

PUPPY BITCH

1 st … Harbin KRYSTAWAY VERONICA MARS

Liked this puppy upon entering ring. Bold spotting on tight white based coat. Nice cat like feet. Lovely dark eyes and feminine expression. Very well schooled however the overall picture when standing was spoilt with stacking and being far to over stretched, which was such a shame. I really wanted to do more for her.

2 nd …Marr DUMBLEDEER VOODOO CHILD

Nice make and shape, stood all four square. Moved with good drive from the rear hindquarters and good level top line.

3 rd … Orr JAYBIOR JADE

Good black, nice overall picture, standing all four square.

JUNIOR BITCH

1 st …Helland CH GENTRY BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Beautiful sound bitch of good quality, maturing nicely. Well handled and moved from the rear with good strong hindquarters. Nice level top line and good tail carriage. Ribs well sprung, nice loin and good wither of stifle.

2 nd …McLean WHYTEWOOD WYLDE WENDY

Liked this bitch, she challenged hard for blue ribbon today. Good solid black, old fashioned type, short coupled. Good mover and at ease with ones handler

3 rd … Seanmya Knls SEANMYA MOROCCAN GIFT

Nice liver bitch, kind expression, moved well.

INTERMEDIATE BITCH

1 st … Young DUMBLEDEER TINKER BELLE *

Striking bitch of excellent quality and lots to like about her . Well groomed and a beautiful white tight based coat with good black pigmentation. Super level top line with correct tail set, length reaching approximately to hock. Great freedom of movement, smooth powerful action with long stride. Well arched toes and cat like feet and nails well trimmed . Excellent class to win and also a pleasure to award Best Opposite Sex In Show. ChB.

2 nd ….Dr Lewis…DALYSIUM LASAIR

Another quality bitch and very well schooled. Good head and ear carriage, pleasing expression, lovely dark eyes. Good reach of neck and well placed shoulders. Correct level top line and tail set. Good class to get a red ribbon.

3 rd …McConachy LACRIMA CHRISTI CHARMELLA (imp CRO )

Yet once again, a good handler and very well schooled and was shown in tip top condition. Good make and shape and stood all four square.

AUSTRALIAN BRED BITCH

1 st …Johnson CH HILLOFSILVER LILLIBET *

Beautiful, correct coloured liver bitch and what a great class to win. Super mover at ease with the handler. Well proportioned and balanced. Good head, correct ear set and nicely arched neck. Lovely depth of chest and good spring of rib. Won the class on movement, a pleasure to watch her go around the show ring. Challenged hard indeed for top honours but just lost out today. ResChB.

2 nd …Dr Doong HILLOFSILVER LULU

Good make and shape bitch of sound quality. Good black spotting on tight white based coat. Moved with drive from behind and once again well schooled, challenged hard for that blue ribbon today.

3 rd …Helland CH GENTRY YUKON ROSE

Lots to like about this black bitch, a worthy CH. Moved again without any effort. Good reach of neck, great top line and correct tail set. If knit picking just a bit on the small side for me.

OPEN BITCH

Lots went un- placed in this class .

1 st … Dyer CH PACEAWAY ICED KOFFEE

Beautifully constructed, quality liver bitch. Lovely clean lines, well angulated front and rear. Feminine head with a good reach of neck. Well placed shoulders and super type cat feet. Moved with power but also with grace. Looked the picture. Excellent class to win.

2 nd …Lucas… CH RAVENWYNTER DANSEUSE

Another worthy Australian CH. Moved with drive from good hindquarters and with excellent second thighs. Good eye colour, correct make and shaped head with kind feminine expression. Well handled and at ease with ones owner. Yet another one who challenged hard for that blue ribbon on the day.

3 rd … McConachy CH SWIFTGAIT ENTERTHENIGHT ET

This bitches spotting is not her fortune, shame about the ticking, however I overlooked this because of the excellent movement. Moved with such drive and was well shown to its best advantage.

NEUTER BITCH

1 ST …Osmond Hillofsilver HARLOW

Good liver bitch of correct colour, good spotting. Did not move as well as the dog.

2nd… Osmond HILLOFSILVER KYRSTAL

Sound bitch but movement today was not that good.
